Mark Rothko (1903-1970) is considered one of the central figures in American postwar painting, representing the New York School's abstract expressionism direction together with Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still. The painter was born in Daugavpils, but in 1913 emigrated to the United States with family. The Mark Rothko Art Center in Daugavpils was opened in 2013.
