The lesser spotted eagle (Clanga pomarina) is special for Latvia, as approximately one-fifth of the entire population of lesser spotted eagles in the world nests specifically in Latvia. The lesser spotted eagle is a medium-sized bird of prey, whose wingspan can reach 150 centimetres. It has long and broad wings with jagged tips and it features brown plumage.

The stamps depict the National Armed Forces’ combat vehicle reconnaissance (tracked) or CVR (T), staff and support vessel Virsaitis and helicopter Mi-17.

The Latvian Army was established on 10 July 1919 by combining the Independent Brigade with the Northern Latvia Brigade. A few months later, on the 11th of November, the newly established army liberated Riga from Bermont’s troops.

The three new postage stamps depict fundamental facts of the Song and Dance Celebration movement, events and personalities.

The stamp with a face value of € 0.54 is dedicated to the Song celebration. The centre of the stamp depicts the legendary choir conductor Haralds Mednis, bet the background includes several other prominent Latvian choirmasters and Song Celebration chief directors.

The tradition of Dance Celebration is featured on the stamp with the face value of € 0.57. The stamp depicts two dancers in traditional national costumes of Barta (Bārta) parish.

The third stamp with the face value of € 1.42 renders the image of Ligo banner of the Song Celebration, which was created along with the first Latvian Song Celebration in 1873.

The FDC was autographed by artist Elita Viliama, author of the stamps of the entire series Republic of Latvia – 100.

This year, which marks the 130th anniversary of A.Kronenbergs (a well-known Latvian artist and illustrator of children’s books), Latvijas Pasts commemorates the artist by issuing Christmas stamps, featuring the works by A.Kronenbergs from various books illustrated by the author. The first day postmark and the special cover are also decorated with A.Kronenbergs’ drawing.

The stamp with a face value of €0.57 depicts two legendary Latvian basketball players – Uļjana Semjonova and Jānis Krūmiņš (1930–1990). U.Semjonova is one of the world’s best basketball players: she is a ten-time European champion, three-time world champion and two-time Olympic champion. During his sports career J.Krūmiņš won three silver medals in the Olympic Games and was a three-time European champion and three-time European Cup winner.

Lighthouses of Latvia - Ovisi Lighthouse

Ovisi Lighthouse is located on Cape Ovisi in Targale Parish, Ventspils Municipality, at a distance of 360 metres from the coastline of the Baltic Sea. The lighthouse was opened in 1814, and it is the oldest functioning lighthouse in Latvia today.

The stamp depicts the front page of the special issue of the newspaper Diena that came out on the 21st of August 1991. This issue contained the published Constitutional Law On the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia adopted by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia, which restored the de facto national independence of the Republic of Latvia.

Turaida Castle is one of the best-known archaeological and architectural monuments of Latvia. The construction of the masonry castle started in 1214 at the site of the wooden castle of the Livonian leader Caupo of Turaida, which had burnt down during a battle. Nowadays, Turaida Castle is one of the oldest medieval castles to be seen in Latvia.
