55th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's Flight into Space

Date of Issue : 12 April 2016

On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first man in the history of the world, who travelled into outer space. Carrier rocket "Vostok" with the ship "Vostok-1" with Gagarin on board was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. After 108 minutes of flight Gagarin successfully landed in the Saratov region, near the town of Engels.

The stamp was issued with an overprint of the new denomination of 31 RUB was placed on the stamp of 2009 "75 Years of the Birth of Y. Gagarin".

Date of Issue : 28 March 2014

Mark Lasarevich Gallai (1914–1998) was a Russian test pilot, writer, Hero of the Soviet Union.

For the time of flight operation Gallai utilized 125 types of aircrafts, helicopters and gliders. He was conferred with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1957 for his valor and bravery demonstrated under testing of new aviation equipment.

“Through Invisible Barriers”, his first book, was published in 1960. In 1965 Gallai became a member of the USSR Union of Writers. And since 1975 he has been fully focused on book-writing.

The stamp reflects the portrait of M.L. Gallai against the background of strategic bomber М-3 developed by the Design Bureau n.a. V. Myasishchev, for testing of which Mark Lasarevich Gallai was conferred with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

In 2014 the Moscow Zoological Park, one of the oldest zoos in Europe, will become 150 years old.

At the opening it contained 134 domestic animals, 153 wild animals and birds and 7 reptiles. Today one can see in the Moscow Zoo more than eight thousand animals, some species have been bred by experts for the first time in the world.

The margins of the souvenir sheet depict: a Macaw parrot, a giraffe, a tiger, a manul cat, a peacock, a crocodile, a brown baby bear, a pink flamingo, an Asian elephant, and a gibbon; the postage stamp shows the main entrance to the building of the Moscow Zoo.

XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi

The opening ceremony of the XXII Winter Olympic Games took place on February 7, 2014 at the Fisht stadium, located in the Olympic Park. More than 5,500 athletes and team members from over 80 countries attend the event, which was held on February 7 to 23, 2014.

15 winter sports disciplines combined into seven Olympic sports are included in the programme of the Olympic Winter Games of 2014: three skating sports, six ski sports, two types of bobsleigh, as well as four separate sports: biathlon, curling, ice hockey and luge. In total, 98 sets of medals will be given away.

The margins of the souvenir sheet carry a QR code with an encrypted link to the www.sochi2014.com website, against the background of Krasnaya Polyana mountain peaks; there are gold, silver and bronze Olympic medals depicted on the postage stamps.

10p stamp : Red Banner mine sweeper “Mina”
Mine sweeper “Mina” took part in the landing operations in 1942 in Alushta, in 1943 in South Ozereika and other combat operations. The mine sweeper was awarded the title of Red Banner.

12p stamp : Guard escort ship “Metel”
The escort ship “Metel” maintained a patrol on the approaches to the main base of fleet, convoyed landing and transport ships, launched an assault into enemy’s bases and ports. On August 26, 1945 the Escort ship “Metel” was awarded the title “Guard”.

15p stamp : Guard armored boat BKA-75
In 1942 the armored boat BKA-75 participated in battles for Stalingrad. In spring and in summer of 1943 BKA-75 convoyed caravans of transport and at the end of the year it took part in a famous Kerch-Eltigen landing operation.

20p stamp : Red Banner gun vessel “Usyskin”
Gun vessel “Usyskin” was included into the Volga fleet. It was awarded the title of Red Banner for the participation in the defense of Stalingrad.

The Russian Post is one of the oldest in Europe, it started in the 9th-10th centuries. The coachman driving was used to deliver written messages; it was a system of postal yards (yams), connecting cities of Russia with Moscow. In the first half of the 18th century the coachman driving gave place to post troikas among the advantages of which there were high speed, endurance, large capacity and good passability.

The era of famous Russian troikas came to an end when horses were replaced by the railway transport and cars.

The postage stamps depict the building of the Winter Palace, the Admiralty and the St. Isaac Cathedral, the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island.

The Admiralty is the first building on the left bank of the Neva River in Saint Petersburg, which has been conceived by Peter I only like a shipyard. From the 1740s the construction of grandiose, festive buildings in appearance in baroque style has been begun. The Winter Palace has been served the main residence of the Russian tsars for many years. At the beginning of the XIX century the city has been decorated with the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island with the Stock Exchange building and the Rostral Columns as well as the St. Isaac Cathedral that has been built during 40 years.

The war between Russia and Turkey begun as the result of the rise of the national liberation movement against Turkish domination in the Balkans and the aggravation of the international contradictions in the Middle East. In summer of 1877 the most heroic episode of the Russian-Turkish war began – the defense of the Shipka Pass during which the Russian military leader M.D. Skobelev distinguished himself. With a decisive attack he battered the forces of the Turkish army. In February 1878 Skobelev’s detachment occupied San Stefano where on February 20, 1878 the Treaty of San Stefano was signed on favorable terms for Russia This treaty also brought the liberation of Bulgaria from the 500 years of Ottoman yoke. Due to his successful actions Skobelev won great popularity in Bulgaria and Russia.

The souvenir sheet depicts a fragment of the picture of N.D. Dmitriev-Orenburgsky "The General M.D. Skobelev on a horse" (1883) from the collection of the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum named after V.P. Sukachev.

Juniperus davurica is a procumbent shrub with branches covered with gray shell bark. Juniperus davurica is widely distributed in North China, Yakutia, Transbaikalia, North Mongolia, Maritime Territory, Khabarovsk krai, Amur region.

Microbiota decussata is a monotypic genus of coniferous shrub in the cypress family Cupressaceae. It can be found on the slopes of Russian Far East. Epithet “decussate” is related to the disposition of scales of leaves and female cones. Microbiota decussate is listed in the Russian Red Book as a threatened species.

Larix cajanderi is the most northern tree growing in these conditions. It is distributed in East of the Lena River, in the basin its tributary the Aldan River, the littoral of the Sea of Okhotsk. It can be found in the basin of the Yana River, the Indirka River, the Kolyma River, the Anadyr River, the Penzhina River and also in Kamchatka. It can grow up to 800 years or more.

Siberian Spruce (Pícea obováta) is one of the most important species of Siberian woods. It grows from North Europe to Magadan region, in the Northland, Kazakhstan, the north of Mongolia, China (Northern Manchuria). As a rule, it usually grows as an accompanying species in mixed forests. It isn’t a fundamental forest forming tree.

Alexander Ivanovich Pokryshkin (1913-1985) is a Soviet flying ace, the first three times Hero of the Soviet Union, Marshal of Aviation.

During the World War II, A.I. Pokryshkin was the commander of the 16th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment and the 9th Guards Fighter Air Division. He developed new tactics of air patrols. By May 1944 the flying ace accomplished 550 combat missions, personally shot down 50 German aircrafts.

The stamp illustrates the portarait of A.I. Pokryshkin, the works of the painter S.N. Prisekin and aircraft “Aerokobra”.

The Order of Suvorov was established on 7 September 2010. This Order is awarded to the commander alliances, commandants of class of services of Armed Forces of the Russian Federation for efficient organization of operations and force grouping guidance; for efficient organization and guidance of formations of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation during the activities of strategic deterrence of the powerful character that secure non-admission against the Russian Federation and its allies

The Order of Alexander Nevsky was established on 7 September 2010. This Order is awarded to citizens of the Russian Federation in recognition of their highly meritorious services to the Fatherland, outstanding achievements in enhancement of defense potential of the State, and distinctive personal achievements in various fields of economics, research and development, social and cultural, educative and other socially beneficial activities.

The postage stamp depicts the portrait of G.N. Flyorov and the element 114 of the Mendeleev's periodic table, named Flerovium.

Georgy Nikolayevich Fleorov after studying at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute started to work there under the direction of I.V. Kurchatov. In 1940, together with K. A. Petrzhak, discovered the spontaneous fission of heavy nuclei. The work was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1946). In 1955 - 1959 years, Flerov investigated the interactions of complex nuclei and the synthesis of new elements. The physicist founded The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in 1957 and was its director until his death
