100 Years Herdbook of the Estonian Native Breed Cattle

More than a hundred years ago breeders started to document production data, instituting the Herdbook. The first animals were included from the Vahi Farm cattle of the Tartu Estonian Farmers’ Association on August 21, 1914. Today the Herdbook means the country breed cattle of controlled descent. The Herdbook includes all the country breed heads of cattle of suitable descent. Starting from 1985 data of the country breed animals are also in an electronic database at the Animal Recording Center. In 1914-2010 10 059 heifers, 1769 bulls, a total of 11,808 head of cattle have been entered into the Herdbook.

Turaida Castle is one of the best-known archaeological and architectural monuments of Latvia. The construction of the masonry castle started in 1214 at the site of the wooden castle of the Livonian leader Caupo of Turaida, which had burnt down during a battle. Nowadays, Turaida Castle is one of the oldest medieval castles to be seen in Latvia.

Eastern Spadefoot Toad (Pelobatessyriacus)
The Eastern Spadefoot Toad lives along the edges of winter pools in the Mediterranean area of Israel. There are approximately 40 known populations in Israel. The populations in the Golan Heights and the Upper Galilee are genetically different than those in the Lower Galilee and the Coastal Plain.

Southern Banded Newt (Ommatotritonvittatus)
The Southern Banded Newt lives along the edges of winter pools in the Mediterranean area of Israel. The adults are active from the beginning of winter. They are reddish-brown in color with a white abdomen and orange edges.

Near Eastern Fire Salamander (Salamandrainfraimmaculata)
The Near Eastern Fire Salamander lives along the edges of winter pools, streams and springs on Israel's Mediterranean coast,on Mt. Hermon, in the Galilee and in the Carmel mountains.

Hula Painted Frog (Latonianigriventer)
The Hula Painted Frog was first documented in the Hula Valley in the 1940's. Later, after not being seen since the 1950's, it was the first amphibian species in the world to be classified as being extinct. It was rediscovered in the Hula Nature Reserve in November 2011.

Whampoa Military Academy

The Whampoa Military Academy was founded by Sun Yat-sen in 1924. The military academy was officially opened on 1 May 1924 , but the first lessons began on 16 June 1924. The inauguration was on Changzhou Island offshore from the Whampoa (Huangpu) dock in Guangzhou, thus earning its name. During the inaugural ceremonies, Sun Yat-sen delivered a speech that was later to become the lyrics of the national anthem of the Republic of China.
