The paintings of Henn-Olavi Roode (4 Nov 1924 – 25 Dec 1974) constitute the most extensive attempt to interpret and develop post-war modernism in the constrained circumstances of the period. Roode did not limit himself to one sphere alone, and his searches in painting were expressed in city, interior and marine views. In the mid-1960s he took up abstractionism while also experimenting with portraits in different interpretations. In 1962 he painted his famous Market, which has been called the artist's manifesto. Roode's most important canvases were large compositions with numerous figures; they are the most serious works concerning the relations of figures, movement and space in the Estonian painting of the 1960s.

Handicraft from Hong Kong - Dough Figurines (Left)
Dough figurine making is an enchanting Chinese folk art. The major ingredient of the dough is wheat flour. Figurine makers turn the dough into lifelike figurines and paint them to make them more vivid. Simple tools such as a pair of small scissors, a comb, some bamboo splints and a bone needle are used to add details to the dough. The sophistication lies in the manual stretching, rolling, cutting and assembling. Legendary heroes and mythical beasts are finely crafted to be loved by many, old and young alike. Among different designs and themes of dough making is the lion's head, the choice to symbolise luck and blessings on festive occasions.
Handicraft from Romania - Painted Eggs (Right)
Easter is the most important Christian festival for Romanians. Starting on Holy Thursday, women and children gather to spend all day painting eggs in a multitude of colours. This custom is very old in Romania and is a symbol of spring and the rebirth of nature. In old times, a painted egg was believed to have magic powers. Each colour or pattern used to decorate the egg was meant to combat a certain form of evil. Even today, Romanians still believe that painted eggs can bring good luck and protection for their homes. The stamp shows egg painting with melted wax and a pencil-like tool called the “chişiţă”.

- The drifting Goguryeo people who stood up to the Tang,
In the aftermath of the downfall of Goguryeo in 668, the Tang Dynasty forced many drifting Goguryeo people to move to Tang. At the time, Daejoyeong was also taken to Tang together with the multitude of those drifting people. When the Kitan tribe rose in revolt, Daejoyeong, who had been subjugated by Tang, mustered the drifting Goguryeo people to stand up to Tang. At Cheonmunryeong, Daejoyeong soundly defeated the Tang army after it had been chased across the Lia-Ho River. He rallied the drifting Goguryeo and Malgal people and built a castle on Dongmo Mountain to establish the Balhae Kingdom in 698.
Thanks to its insurmountable bravery, Balhae established a grand empire encompassing what is now Manchuria of China, the Yunhaju of Russia, and most of the North Korean territory, securing the largest area in Korea’s history. Balhae, which succeeded Goguryeo, based its tradition and culture on Goguryeo, accepted the Tang civilization and established a splendid history and culture, thus being called "Haedongseongguk" which means “a thriving country to the east of the sea.” Since its foundation in 698, Balhae shared a border with Silla with Balhae in the north and Silla in the south for about 230 years, only to collapse in 926 due to the invasion of the Kitan tribe.

50th Anniversary of the Agency Algeria Press Service
Date of Issue : 25 October 2011
Algérie Presse Service is the Algerian national press agency. It was created on 1 December 1961 in Tunis, during the national liberation war to be the flagship of the Algerian Revolution on the global media scene. After independence, its headquarters was naturally transferred to Algiers.
APS counts a staff of nearly 460 employees including 300 reporters, photographers and translators. It produces about 600 news dispatches daily in three languages (Arabic, French and English). It uses satellite links via three satellites and also a website dedicated to information and photos.
It is really very interesting to note that there is a mistake in the logo of APS at both the stamp and the FDC cover. There is a point missing in one arabic character of the APS logo. You may see the correct version of APS logo at their facebook website at : http://www.facebook.com/pages/ALGERIE-PRESSE-SERVICE/271928862821326. Thank You so much to my Algerian friend !

On 11 Nov 2011, I went to Kowloon Bay Post Office (KBY) to sent myself and my friends some Hong Kong 11.11.11 covers. The cover at top is a cover affixed with postage label printed by postal clerk at counter. It was cancelled with KBY-1 datestamp postmark.
Meanwhile, I also got the chance to use the self-service postal kiosk currently on trial at Kowloon Bay Post Office. The cover below is affixed with a postage label printed by self-service postal kiosk. I just dropped the cover to the assigned post box next to the self-service postal kiosk and did not have any expectation to the cancellation. To my surprise, Hong Kong Post used the IMC-11 datestamp postmark to cancel the cover. The cancellation is really very nice. I very much like it. Thank You very much to Hong Kong Post !
