Estonian Fauna: Roe Deer
Date of Issue : 16 February 2012
The Roe Deer is a small crevice with a slender body and thin legs, standing about 135 centimetres high and weighing up to 30 kilos. In summer it has reddish brown and in winter greyish hair. The white or dull yellow rump patch is particularly conspicuous in females. Only males have antlers. Their favourite habitats are landscapes where clear areas alternate with groves. In the summer they eat grass but have to do with shrubs, tree or bush shoots and bark, including spruce and pine needles in winter. The young, one to two fawns per one female, are born in May to June. Roebucks live to be seven to eight years old in the wild, goats a little longer. Their most important natural enemies are the wolf and the lynx. In late winter also stray dogs kill animals that have become week over the winter.

In Memory
Date of Issue : 7 February 2012
This stamp is dedicated to the mourning and remembrance that are an inherent part of Israeli culture.
It is customary to light memorial candles in commemoration of the souls of the dead. In Judaism lighting a memorial candle is credited with the ability to further the ascension of the deceased’s soul from this world to the next. This ability is related to the belief that the living help the deceased find eternal peace in the next world and to ascend to heaven. The lighting of candles in memory of the deceased stems from the Book of Proverbs 20, 27: “The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord”.
It is customary to light such candles during the first seven days of mourning, on the anniversary of the date of death and on Yom Kippur. Candles are lit both at home and at the gravesite.

The Book of Exodus chapter 28 describes how to prepare the High Priest’s holy garments, including the most magnificent of all, the Breastplate, Choshen.
The Choshen was a small garment embellished with gemstones and one of the eight garments worn by the High Priest as he served G-D. Each jewel was inscribed with one of the names of the 12 tribes of Israel. The High Priest’s breastplate symbolized the unity of the people of Israel before G-D as well as the importance of the position of the High Priest and the sanctity of the function, as he stood before G-D.
The biblical description states that the breastplate was to be made up of four rows of three engraved gems, each jewel set in gold.
These two FDCs are really very nice. I just love them. Thank you very much to my friend !

Jonáš Záborský (1812 – 1876)
Date of Issue : 3 February 2012
Jonáš Záborský was born in a small noble family in Záborie near Martin on 3 February 1812. He decided to study theology and graduated in 1834. He became an Evangelic priest, but converted to Catholicism in 1842 and then he worked as a Catholic priest. He died on 23 January 1876 during a cholera epidemic.
The greatest contribution of Jonáš Záborský to Slovak culture is his literary work. He entered the world of literature shortly after he had finished his theological studies with classicist fables and collections of poetry. The most important part of his work is a picaresque, grotesque prose, in which he deals with the problem of contrast of abstract standards and the reality of life. He wrote a number of difficult plays, which were difficult to be staged. These plays dealt mainly with early history of the Slovaks, Serbs as well as history of Russia after the death of Ivan the Terrible (the so-called “Lžidimitriády”). His most important historical works include extensive “Dejiny Uhorského kráľovstva od začiatku do čias Žigmundových” (History of the Kingdom of Hungary from the beginning to the times of Sigismund).

50th Anniversary of Korea - Mexico Diplomatic Relations
Date of Issue : 26 January 2012

- Gray Whale
The year 2012 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Mexico.
Unlike other whales, only two different populations of the gray whale were reported: the West Pacific population that migrates between the Sea of Okhotsk and Korea’s East Sea and the East Pacific population that journey between Alaska and Mexico. The West Pacific gray whale was first reported to the academic circle in 1912 by Loy Andrew, the American explorer, under the name of “Korean gray whale.” Due to overhunting, they are now endangered, and currently it is reported that only 130 of the species are living in the sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The East Pacific gray whale, that mate and give birth in Baja California, Mexico, was once also endangered due to reckless hunting. Currently, however, thanks to the steadfast protection policy, there are 20,000 of them roaming the waters.
The stamp features a young gray whale and its adult version. The young gray whale shows the gray whale’s own, inherent skin pattern without any barnacles or whale lice attached to the skin. The adult gray whale, on the other hand, vividly shows both the adult gray whale’s unique characteristic covered with traces of barnacles once attached but now gone, as well as the gray whale’s own unique outer appearance of its thick lower jaw.

China Postcard - Canton Tower

China
During the Chinese New Year holiday, I spent 3 days in Guangzhou and visited the Canton Tower. The postage prepaid postcard above is actually the admission ticket of the Canton Tower (Really very expensive, cost RMB 120). Frankly speaking, it was not worth visiting the Tower on that day. The weather was very cloudy, so there was not much to see up there.
On the top floor of the Tower, there is an air-top post office (just a store selling expensive philatelic items). I dropped the postage prepaid postcard to the post box nearby. I did not expected the air-top post office cancellation on the postcard was so special and nice.

Cultural Heritage of Slovakia: Piarist Church in Prievidza
Date of Issue : 27 January 2012
Piarists came to Horná Nitra region in 1666 at the invitation of Mária Františka Pálffyová, widow of Hungarian palatine. With her support, they finished building of college in Prievidza in 1676, and building of church two years later.
In 1740, Piarists started a complex reconstruction of their monastery church, managed by father Hyacint Hangke, a college administrator. They dismantled the original church and started to build foundations for the new one according to the demanding late baroque concept.
The church was consecrated on August 19, 1753 by Pavol Révay, Esztergom canonist and titular bishop. However, overall interior decoration and equipment in the final form was still being complemented in the second half of the 18th century.
