Memorable Figures Series Stamps (2nd)

The second in the Memorable Figures Series introduces the national poets, Han Yongun, Lee Yuksa and Yun Dongju.

Han Yongun was an independence activist who led the March 1st Independence Movement. He was born in Hongseong, Chungcheongnam-do in 1879. He died in 1944 without witnessing the independence of his homeland.

Lee Yuksa was a writer and also an independence fighter. He was born in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do in 1904. He was arrested, detained and imprisoned a total of 17 times during his life time. In the end, he closed his short life of 40 years in a prison attached to the Japanese Consulate General in Beijing.

Yun Dongju sang about the independence of his country with lyrical poetic words. He was born in Myeongdong village in Jiandao. He later went to study in Japan and was arrested and imprisoned on suspicion of participating in the independence movement in 1943. In February 1945 a telegram was sent to his hometown, ‘Dongju died in prison.’ He was 27 years old.

Mihkli Parish lies on the boundary of the Lääne and Pärnu Counties. One of the stamps has a young man and girl in clothes of the mid-19th century. The young man wears a suit typical to the period but differs from others by its greenish blue colour. Also the girl’s cardigan with puffy sleeves is slightly peculiar. The girl is bareheaded, but married women wore a rather peculiar cocked cap which had to be tied under the chin so it would stay in place at all. The embroidery of one such cap has been used in the First Day cancellation. In the second half of the 19th century women of Vigala Parish wore beautiful red chequered skirts, cardigans with the shoulders buffed up and wide necks, later also jackets, tall hats, aprons of print cotton as well as numerous kerchiefs. Necklaces of coin pendants were the preferred jewellery in Vigala Parish; some of them had several rows of beads and pendants. Sometimes we have to do with coin imitations, such as the pendent pictured in the FDC.

Mark Lasarevich Gallai (1914–1998) was a Russian test pilot, writer, Hero of the Soviet Union.

For the time of flight operation Gallai utilized 125 types of aircrafts, helicopters and gliders. He was conferred with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1957 for his valor and bravery demonstrated under testing of new aviation equipment.

“Through Invisible Barriers”, his first book, was published in 1960. In 1965 Gallai became a member of the USSR Union of Writers. And since 1975 he has been fully focused on book-writing.

The stamp reflects the portrait of M.L. Gallai against the background of strategic bomber М-3 developed by the Design Bureau n.a. V. Myasishchev, for testing of which Mark Lasarevich Gallai was conferred with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

In 2014 we will celebrate 100 years since awarding the Nobel Price to Max von Laue for the experiments that for the first time revealed the atomic (crystal) structure of solid matter via X-ray diffraction. That is why the UNO announced the year 2014 to be the International Year of Crystallography.

Cadastral Resurvey

A Cadastral resurvey to be undertaken once again after it was conducted one century ago.

The cadastral map currently being used in Korea was made of paper during the Japanese colonial period using outdated technology such as bamboo scale. It was transformed and later damaged over time, thus leaving about 15% of the national land unmatched with the map.

The cadastral Resurvey Project will be carried out over 19 years from 2012 to 2030
